A Charlotte development company is positioning itself to kick start Chapel Hill’s long-dormant office market just as the Triangle could emerge from a COVID-19 slump.

Gwendolyn Harrison Smith was the first African-American woman to attend classes at the University of North Carolina. She enrolled in a Spanish class in the summer of 1952 as a graduate student after already earning a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree and was teaching at Johnson C. Smith in Charlotte.

The seven candidates for Town Council in Chapel Hill recently answered a series of questions on development, housing, taxes, traffic, and more. Two candidates, Jessica Anderson and Michael Parker, cited the incentives for office space as Glen Lennox as a positive move for commercial development.

As Glen Lennox begins its renovations in the next few weeks, it is looking to recognize strong female historical figures while naming the new buildings.

Construction will soon begin on a large commercial office building in Chapel Hill. The building at Glen Lennox will be the third of its kind to be built in Chapel Hill in the last nine years and is a part of a greater project to restore the historic property to its former grandeur.

The partnership will give Grubb Properties the opportunity to bring more commercial taxes, jobs and community benefits to Chapel Hill more quickly, Mayor Pam Hemminger said.

Grubb Properties and the Town of Chapel Hill have been working together on developing office spaces in Glen Lennox, a planned community in Chapel Hill. Following several years of collaboration, the two parties may have finally reached a breakthrough.

The Chapel Hill Town Council unanimously approved a development agreement for Glen Lennox on Monday night. The council also voted 5-3 to conditionally approve entering the negotiation phase with East-West Partners, which seeks to develop 120 acres at the Obey Creek site.
