CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (May 2, 2018) – Grubb Properties held a kick-off ceremony today to celebrate the first phase of the multi-faceted redevelopment of the historic Glen Lennox community. The historic and beloved neighborhood, first developed in the 1950s, sits in the heart of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and represents one of the largest redevelopment projects in the company’s history.
Since 2008, Grubb Properties has been collaborating with Chapel Hill residents and the town to develop a 20-year revitalization plan that preserves the integrity and history of Glen Lennox while allowing it to undergo a significant redevelopment that will expand the opportunities available to the community. As part of the kick-off event, Grubb Properties shared renderings of initial building concepts for the project’s first phase, which will bring a new clubhouse and leasing office, Link Apartments® community, parking deck, and a community recreation space to Glen Lennox. An innovative office building is also being considered.
“After a decade of conversations and planning, we are very excited to take this next step alongside the Chapel Hill community and current residents,” said Clay Grubb, CEO of Grubb Properties. “We are committed to honoring the legacy this development has cultivated over the past 68 years and confident the redevelopment will continue a solid foundation to support generations of Glen Lennox residents.”
As part of the redevelopment, existing buildings at Glen Lennox will be upgraded with energy-efficient windows and appliances, water-efficient plumbing, and improved insulation, wiring and ventilation. Updates to the neighborhood’s winding streets and a new crosswalk signal will provide an easy commute for pedestrians, vehicles and cyclists. Bricks from the original buildings are set to be repurposed and used in the new development’s construction.
Grubb Properties is committed to investing in the future of Glen Lennox, both in terms of updates to the community and the satisfaction of current and future residents. Under a company-wide program, rent increases are capped for residents who have lived at a Grubb Properties community for five years or more. In addition, the company has pledged to dedicate units at Glen Lennox Apartments to an innovative, community-based coalition bringing more affordable housing to Chapel Hill.
