The Gwendolyn Honors First African-American Woman To Attend UNC
(CHAPEL HILL, N.C.) July 14, 2020 – Construction on The Gwendolyn, a four-story 106,000-square- foot, Class A office building, has reached its “topping out” and is on schedule to open in the first quarter of 2021. The Gwendolyn will help address a critical shortage of commercial office space in Chapel Hill and feature a host of amenities such as a terrace café, indoor bike racks and onsite property management.
The Gwendolyn is part of the overall redevelopment by Grubb Properties of the Glen Lennox community located at the intersection of Hwy 54 and U.S. 15\501. Other components of the first phase of redevelopment include Link Apartments® Linden, a covered parking deck, clubhouse, bike connector trails, shared conference facilities, bus line access and other features.
“We are tremendously pleased to have reached the topping out milestone on schedule,” said Joe Dye, Executive Vice President for Grubb Properties. “The Gwendolyn will be a fantastic home to a range of companies who desire its convenient location and modern amenities. We are proud of the partnership we have forged with the Town of Chapel Hill over the years and have diligently worked to ensure this building, as well as the entire redevelopment of Glen Lennox, fits the character and economic development needs of this community.”
Grubb Properties announced in August 2018 the office building would be named The Gwendolyn to honor Gwendolyn Harrison, the first African American woman to attend UNC-Chapel Hill. Her admission to the university’s Ph.D. program was revoked in 1951 because of her race, but after fighting for her right to stay, university trustees overwhelmingly reinstated her admission.
“Grubb Properties is committed to remembering individuals who contributed to the greater good in our society,” said Clay Grubb, CEO of Grubb Properties. “I admire Gwendolyn Harrison’s accomplishments and determination to never give up. As we move forward with the Glen Lennox redevelopment, we look forward to announcing additional names that integrate history with the community’s modern design.”
Leasing opportunities for the Gwendolyn are now available. Inquiries should be directed to JLL at rduleasing@am.jll.com or 919-851-9111.
