A “Berry” Nice Day Out with the Family
Is there a more beautiful place for springtime than Chapel Hill? Our area provides incredibly scenic sights as spring comes into bloom and is great for classic seasonal activities like gardening, Easter egg hunting, picnics and berry picking! Berry picking is a wonderful family activity that provides a sense of discovery and excitement for people of all ages. Be ready when these fruity gems turn ruby red with this list of the best spots to pick your own fruit.
Jean’s
Open since 1980, Jean’s Berry Patch and Neighborhood Market is certainly one of the more famous local spots for berry picking. Just within the boundaries of Apex, but a mere 20 minutes or less from Glen Lennox, Jean’s has hosted countless families on lovely spring afternoons for years to pick some of the tastiest strawberries around. Recently, they’ve expanded their offerings, now operating a small shop where you can buy jams, honey, cake and anything else you could use to turn your pickings into a delicious strawberry shortcake! Don’t forget to stop by in autumn as Jean’s becomes a pumpkin patch.
Lyon Farms
A little less than 30 minutes from Glen Lennox and just past Falls Lake, you will find Lyon Farms. Lyon Farms is a family owned and operated fruit and vegetable farm that’s only open seasonally. Come strawberry season, Lyon is a local favorite pick-your-own spot. Beyond strawberries, the farm offers blackberries, peaches, raspberries, watermelon, cantaloupes, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes and much more. If you can’t make it out to there, Lyon Farms also posts up a farm stand in Oxford and on Creedmoor Road.
Waller Family Farm
Since 1943, the Waller Family has owned this Durham animal and produce farm. Waller Family Farm has a field of strawberries ready for picking, just buy a bucket and fill it to your heart’s desire. When your kids aren’t enjoying the delight of picking their own berries, they’ll be captivated by the farm’s cows, chickens and horses. Waller Family Farm even has their own bees, and you can buy their honey at the produce stand. Less than 15 minutes from Glen Lennox, the Waller farm offers a full afternoon of family fun.
Hawk Hill Berry Farm
A great spot to keep in mind for late spring and early summer, Hawk Hill Berry Farm is under 30 minutes from our neighborhood and is the home to a field of delicious blueberries that are ripe for the picking. Opening in 2013, the Mebane, NC farm lets you pick your own berries for just $4.50 per quart. Because of the fickle nature of blueberries, be sure to contact the Farm or visit its Facebook page before you visit to make sure there are enough berries available.
Right now the weather is perfect for enjoying a day outside and stocking up on sweet, healthy snacks. Springtime will end before you know it, so make sure to take your family out to one of these spots for the most memorable, photogenic grocery shopping of all time!
