Chapel Hill is Home to Big, Bold Ideas
It’s time to roll up our sleeves and get to work on our community’s most pressing issues.
That’s the call to action The Chamber for a Greater Chapel Hill-Carrboro issued as part of its 12th Annual State of the Community Report. Although the towns have been on an upward trajectory in recent years, in the shadows of their success are issues and challenges that urgently need our attention.
Jay Patel, a Chamber board member and founder of Wintergreen Hospitality, announced the Big Bold Ideas Steering Committee, which is seeking Big, Bold Ideas to make our community a better place to live, work, and start or grow a business.
Between now and October 12, 2019, visit BigBoldIdeas.org and submit your idea for improving our community.
Submitted ideas should have a lasting and positive impact on our community; be ambitious, measurable and accomplishable; and be something you are willing to work on, but cannot accomplish alone.
An example is getting all the students in our district to read on grade level by third grade. This would have implications far beyond test scores, as third grade reading capabilities have been shown to predict future education outcomes and have a profound impact on the rest of a student’s life.
The steering committee will narrow down submissions from the community to three Big, Bold Ideas. Along with Chamber staff, they will conduct research on those three ideas, build a business case for each, and identify funders and co-champions for making actionable change. On January 31, 2020, implementation plans will be announced and discussed during The Chamber’s Annual Meeting.
Glen Lennox is excited to support the Big, Bold Ideas civic improvement initiative and encourage you to be a part of the process. Let’s ask ourselves—from transportation to economic opportunities to education—how can we better serve our community and its people?
