The Glen Lennox Vision is Coming into Sight
Grubb Properties and the Town of Chapel Hill are committed to redeveloping Glen Lennox in a manner that maintains the community’s character, while also making beneficial upgrades for residents and adjacent neighborhoods. After much strategic planning and collaboration with the town, construction crews are hard at work transforming Glen Lennox. As with any major project, there’s much more work happening than meets the eye. Read on to get the latest details and construction updates.
What You Don’t See
Vast infrastructure improvements are a critical component of this project—including those that service Glen Lennox, as well as neighboring communities. More than $1.1 million has been invested in improving the underground stormwater system. This new system replaces the aging infrastructure and headwall, while also increasing the volume it can handle so water can be stored and slowly released over time to avoid flooding.
Working closely with Duke Energy, crews are working to place the utility lines throughout the community underground to provide more reliable power and enhance the neighborhood’s aesthetics.
Other underground systems, including the wet utilities, sanitary and sewer systems, and earthwork activities, have also been installed, with planning for future infrastructure expansion in mind.
What You’re Starting to See
Driving along 15-501, you can see the foundations of the parking deck rising up from the dirt. This four-story parking deck should be topped out around mid-summer, and once the construction is complete, work on the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems will begin.
Link Apartments® Linden, with 215 units, will eventually wrap around the parking structure, and its foundation has already begun to be poured. Both the apartment residents and tenants for a planned future office will use the deck. This shared parking model is one way Grubb is reducing the environmental impact of development, working to keep construction costs lower and rents more affordable, and helping to preserve the community’s aesthetics.
Restoration efforts along Brandon Road are well underway, with sidewalks being repaved after the utility crossing work was completed. A new road, Glen Lennox Drive, is being built to provide construction vehicles access to work sites, and it will eventually be made available to the public. Once construction is complete, Glen Lennox Drive will also include protected bike lanes as part of Grubb Properties’ vision to make Glen Lennox the most bicycle-friendly community in the Carolinas.
What You Will See
Once the foundations have been completed, you will start to see the wood framing of Link Apartments® Linden and its clubhouse going up over the next few months.
Thanks to the Town of Chapel Hill’s support, we also anticipate construction on the Gwendolyn office building to commence in the fall.
A half-acre of greenspace is being preserved and will be open to anyone in Chapel Hill to enjoy. Upon the clubhouse’s completion, Glen Lennox residents will have access to a host of new amenities, including a fitness center, yoga room, outdoor pool, club room, roof terraces and a cycle center for the storage and repair of bikes.
