Local Chef Cooks Up Great Food with a Hearty Side of Philanthropy
There’s a lot of love for chef Bill Smith’s Southern cuisine, but while he was building his legacy at Crook’s Corner, he was also building an inclusive community that serves all of Chapel Hill’s residents—especially its most vulnerable.
As a community advocate who supports affordable housing and families and individuals who face economic hardship, Smith’s contributions to and impact on the community are being recognized at this year’s EmPOWERment Annual Fundraiser, which Glen Lennox is proud to sponsor.
The lively evening of roasting and toasting Bill Smith will be emceed by Orange County commissioner Mark Dorosin, with roasts from acclaimed North Carolina chefs including Ashley Christensen, Ben Barker, Matt Neal and others.
Mark your calendar for Friday, November 15 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Carolina Inn, and get your tickets or make a donation here. Food and drink for the evening will be provided from local favorites, including Guglhupf, Mama Dip’s Kitchen, Vimala’s Curryblossom Café, Lantern, Saltbox Seafood Joint, Centro and more. Guests will also enjoy musical performances by Dylan Branson, William Ferris and John Dee Holeman.
For more than two decades, the nonprofit has helped ensure Chapel Hill offers quality rental units, provided education and counseling services for homeowners, and supported job creation opportunities to maintain a vibrant and diverse community. All proceeds raised will support the EmPOWERment, Inc. mission to empower individuals and communities to achieve their destiny through community organizing, affordable housing and grass roots economic development.
